IDC: Worldwide Collaboration Applications Revenues Show Solid Growth
A new forecast from International Data Corporation (IDC) shows that worldwide revenues in the collaboration applications market grew 28.4% year over year in 2021 to $29.1 billion. The Needham, Massachusetts-based researcher says this growth was driven by a series of factors including companies expanding collaboration to more people, the purchase and integration of multiple solutions to better meet corporate needs, and price increases and/or feature upgrades. The growth extended across all the collaboration markets and submarkets identified by IDC, including team collaboration applications, conferencing, virtual events, enterprise communities, and email applications.
“The expectation and adoption of these applications inside and outside the workplace is now a given,” said Wayne Kurtzman, research vice president, Social, Communities, and Collaboration at IDC. “In the years ahead, collaboration platforms will become more engaging, visual, functional, and community powered. These features, aided by intelligence, will rapidly evolve and support working from anywhere. A new array of metrics will also develop that tie activities to customer outcomes. IDC estimates that the collaborative applications market will grow to $63.8 billion by 2026.”
According to the report, the increase in partners and customers wanting to collaborate with any given business is significant and continues to grow. Yet many businesses remain slow to accept the offer to collaborate.
Enterprise communities will be a market to watch. Companies that do not provide a well-moderated community will have users, even for business-to-business (B2B) companies, quickly form communities where the enterprise cannot leverage it.
The report adds that fully connected enterprise, augmented with collaboration and intelligence, is already starting to create a new era of metrics. Newer KPIs will include key behavioral indicators (KBIs) that look at the effects of situational management, creativity, collaboration, and problem solving and will be tied to actual customer outcomes. Integrations are key to this evolution.

Study: Frequent Cyber Attacks in Healthcare Impact Patient Care
Cynerio, a New York-based provider of healthcare IoT cybersecurity, has released a report conducted in partnership with the Ponemon Institute that details multiple alarming healthcare security trends including widespread and repeated attacks, financial losses measured in the millions, and frequent failures to take basic cybersecurity measures.
Among the key findings:
- 43% of hospitals experienced at least one ransomware attack, and 24% of attacks resulted in increased mortality rates.
- 56% of respondents stated their organizations experienced one or more cyberattacks in the past 24 months involving IoMT/IoT devices. Among those, 58% averaged 9 or more cyberattacks during that time.
- 45% of these respondents report adverse impacts on patient care, and 53% percent of those report adverse impacts resulting in increased mortality rates.
- 71% of respondents rated the security risks presented by IoT/IoMT devices as high or very high, while only 21% report a mature stage of proactive security actions.
- Of the 46% who performed well-known and accepted procedures such as scanning for devices, only 33% of these respondents keep an inventory of the devices that were discovered.
- 47% of those experiencing an attack resulted in a ransom being paid. 32% of the ransoms paid fell in the range of $250k – $500k.
“It’s clear that cyberattackers have increasingly focused their efforts on hospitals since 2020,” said Chad Holmes, Security Evangelist at Cynerio. “What had been unclear was the frequency and resulting damage of their attacks.”
